John Dooley was born and raised in Nashville, TN. Growing up, he played with jazz, funk, soul, and swing bands around Music City. At the University of Tennessee, he studied with trumpet player, arranger, and Knoxville Jazz Orchestra Director Vance Thompson. John was inspired by some of the other incredible faculty members at UT including pianist and former Jazz Messenger Donald Brown, saxophonist Gregory Tardy, and drummer Keith Brown.

Some of John's favorite players include Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley, Sonny Rollins, Freddie Hubbard, Clifford Brown, Bud Powell. John moved up the Albany in fall of 2017.
