Teresa Broadwell is a jazz vocalist, violinist, band leader and arranger. She is formally trained, holding a BA from the Crane School of Music, and an MA in Jazz Studies from the College of St. Rose; however, her real musical identity was nurtured by listening to and learning from the giants of jazz. Her vocal influences include: Lambert, Hendricks and Ross; Eddie Jefferson; King Pleasure; Sarah Vaughan; Betty Carter; Ella Fitzgerald; and Anita O'Day. On fiddle, she draws from Stuff Smith, Joe Venuti, Matt Glaser, and Stephan Grappelli. She started her professional music career while at the Crane School in the mid 1970's, playing a steady gig with a jam band at the Wild Oat bar in Potsdam, New York. This marked the beginning of her musical journey that has straddled the jazz and legit music worlds. After receiving her Bachelor's degree she pursued an ambitious performing schedule with a variety of jazz and roots music bands touring the Midwest and Northeast. Her first recording album (yes, it was vinyl), "Sunny Side of the Street," was released in 1978 during a stint with the "New Moon Swing Band," a group devoted to 3-part vocalese and jump swing. During her tenure with "Doc Scanlon's Rhythm Boys," she was the featured vocalist, performing at concerts, festivals, radio and television shows, and jazz clubs in the greater Northeast. In the 1980's she went on to form her own groups featuring her vocal and swing fiddle talents. In addition to her own ensembles, she continues to perform with the vocal harmony group "Jazz Voices" along with fellow jazz vocalists Jody Shane and Colleen Pratt. Teresa has performed with and/or opened concerts for musical luminaries such as Stan Getz, Jon Hendricks, Marc O'Connor; Asleep at the Wheel; Leon Redbone, violinist Matt Glaser, and baritone sax great Nick Brignola. She has performed at musical hotspots including Jazzmania in New York City; the Cellar Door in Washington DC; Ryles in Cambridge MA; Sandy's Jazz Revival Bar in Beverly MA; the Van Dyke in Schenectady NY; and Red Creek in Rochester, NY. She was also featured with her group the New Moon Swing Band on Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion radio show. Teresa's latest recording "Everything's Jake" (available on Riff Records) features her swing band Thrivin' on A Riff. In addition to her performing schedule, Teresa currently directs the vocal jazz ensemble and teaches jazz voice and violin at the College of St. Rose in Albany, NY. |
