Tim Olsen

Pianist and trumpeter Tim Olsen is active as composer, performer, and educator. He joined the faculty of Union College in Schenectady, NY in 1994, and is currently Associate Professor of Music and Co-Chair of the Department of Performing Arts. He teaches courses in music theory and music history and directs the Union College Jazz Ensemble. He is also Director of Music at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Schenectady, where he plays the organ and leads adult and children's choirs. Olsen holds degrees from Washington University, the University of Minnesota, and Yale University (D.M.A. 1995). A 1990 Fulbright Grant allowed Olsen to study composition at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen. He has performed throughout the Northeast as a solo pianist, in small groups, and as pianist with the Albany-based Joey Thomas Big Band, for whom he has written many arrangements. He can frequently be heard with groups led by Pete Sweeney and Eric Walentowicz.
