Dan Rothstein began his guitar studies at age 7, and was performing professionally at age 13. He continued studying both jazz and classical guitar while obtaining a bachelor's degree in music and science from Columbia University. Dan studied classical guitar with Helen Wade and Jonathan Trotta, and jazz guitar with teachers including Ted Makler and John Scofield. He has performed throughout the eastern United States from Nashville to New England and for many years was based in New York City before moving to his current home in upstate Taghkanic, New York with his wife and three children. His 35 years of guitar performance have included many of the significant performing venues in New York City ranging from the Electric Circus in the late 1960s through Max's Kansas City, the Bitter End, La Mama, the Lone Star Café and the Beacon Theater in the 1970s, Gerde's Folk City, Trax, The Bottom Line and The Cotton Club in the 1980s, and The American Institute of Guitar in the 1990s, as a leader, solo performer and supporting a variety of popular artists. After an eclectic guitar career covering a wide range of styles from country/western to R&B music, Dan once again focuses exclusively on jazz and classical guitar.
Dan's public performance schedule includes frequent solo classical and jazz guitar gigs in the Albany/NYC/Berkshire corridor as well as work with various jazz duos and trios. He is also the regular guitarist for jazz vocalist Andree Pages' group and is featured on her CD, Andree Pages Swings Both Ways. J Hunter of albanyjazz.com wrote of Dan's playing in this pared-down guitar/bass/vocal setting, Rothstein's guitar is a quiet driver that doesn't need a wingman and his subtle sub-references brought a giggle and a gasp to a satisfying performance.
Dan also works with several music contractors booking solo guitar for private receptions and maintains a teaching schedule for intermediate and advanced classical and jazz guitar students.
