The Union College Jazz Ensemble is made up of Union College students as well as members of the Capital District music community and performs in a variety of situations throughout New York and New England. The Jazz Ensemble's repertoire is drawn from the entire literature of jazz-from ragtime and early New Orleans style to bebop, funk, and fusion-and often features original compositions and arrangements. The ensemble regularly brings in guest artists who not only rehearse and perform with the students, but also give workshops in jazz styles and improvisation. Previous guests have included saxophonists Loren Schoenberg, Nick Brignola and Eric Walentowicz, guitarist James Chirillo, drummer Ray Kaczynski, and trombonist Jeff Presslaff. In Spring 2002 the group released its first CD, Live, a compilation of concert recordings spanning the period 1996-2001. The Union College Jazz Ensemble has been led by Prof. Tim Olsen since 1994.
